UNICEF UK and Robbie Williams celebrated an amazing night at Old Trafford as their Soccer Aid benefit game kicked off in front of 70,000 spectators, and millions more watching from home (including me!). This year’s match was jam packed with famous faces from showbiz and soccer, with both teams taking the whole thing pretty seriously.
Obviously with many ex professionals on show, the competitive spirit was bound to be there. But it was the celebrities who seemed the most pumped for the game, with robust challenges flying in from Gordon Ramsey and Mr. Williams himself. With the likes of Zinadine Zidane, Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham playing, there was always going to be a bit of class on show, but the celebrities held their own with great performances from Jonathan Wilkes, Ralf Little and Olly Murs, who showed he also has a bit of nifty footwork away from the stage of X Factor!
After 90 minutes the game was level at 2-2, with the Rest of the World finally winning through thanks to a pea roller of a penalty from Woody Harrelson! A special mention must go out to Jamie Theakston, who performed absolute wonders in the English goal, saving 5 penalties in the shoot out which would be an amazing feat for a professional, let alone a TV presenter!
A great night was had by all on the pitch, those watching at Old Trafford, and of course the millions of us watching at home. Figures have not been correlated yet, but last night’s match should raise up £2.5million for the UNICEF children’s charity. Amazing work I’m sure you’ll agree. A big well done to all of those that took part.
