Schools across the UK are invited to be part of the UNICEF UK ‘Day for Change’ in 2009. This is an educational fundraising event with the emphasis on fun, whilst pupils will also be able to learn about the issues of children in Papua New Guinea.
The official ‘Day for Change’ takes place on 6 February 2009, but each school can choose any day that suits them better. Schools will able to raise money for UNICEF’s health and well-being programmes for children in Papua New Guinea by organising a non-uniform day, dressing up in specific colours, holding cake sales or putting on sponsored events.
UNICEF UK is working hard in Papua New Guinea to ensure children’s health, well-being and basic rights within local communities. But access to this right is sometimes difficult to access in Papua New Guinea due to the surrounding valleys and steep mountains.
Due to this, children do not receive their basic vaccinations, with only 65% of children under the age of one being immunised against measles. Today only 2 out of 10 children have not been immunised against polio, even though Papua New Guinea has been declared free from the disease since 2000.
By signing up to ‘Day for Change’, schools can learn more about the lives of young people and help UNICEF UK ensure that more children in Papua New Guinea achieve their right to a healthy future.
