The charity is the result of a merger between the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and The Cancer Research Fund which took place in 2002. Cancer Research UK seeks to reduce the number of deaths from cancer in the United Kingdom.

It is the world’s largest independent cancer research charity. The organisation funds research in a variety of areas including prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Research is undertaken by both its own employees as well as grant-funded researchers at a variety of universities, hospitals and institutes in the UK. The agency also spends a lot of money trying to raise awareness about cancer by providing information on the disease as well as running campaigns and influencing public policy.

The charity funds the work of more than 4,000 doctors and researchers throughout the UK and also supports more than 200 clinical trials. All the research Cancer Research UK funds is geared towards obtaining a better understanding of how cancer develops and then spreads.

Cancer Research UK also operates a confidential telephone service which is staffed by cancer information nurses. The charity also operates the Cancer Chat forum which is a useful place where people who are dealing with the disease can communicate with others that are also affected by cancer.
