Greenpeace really are going great guns on their efforts to save the Arctic, with over ONE MILLION people having now signed their petition to stop oil drilling. With the Arctic ice melting at a dramatic rate, this once unspoilt area is now under threat from not just oil companies, but industrial fishing and the conflict that comes along with that.
In the last 30 years nearly 75% of our ice cap at the top of the world has melted. Scientists are now proclaiming that the area is in a ‘death spiral’, and unless drastic measure are taken, we could all be in trouble if this trend continues. Ice has been a permanent feature of the Arctic ocean for over 800,000 years, but dirty fossil fuel is melting it at an increased rate. This ice reflects the sun’s heat back into space to keep the planet cool and stabilies the Earth’s weather. Without this cooling system, our seasons will go haywire, causing real problems in growing food.
